What to Check Before Buying an American Mahjong Kit
Compare an American mahjong kit by its contents, readable tiles, compatible racks, storage and the extras your group actually needs.
A complete-looking photograph does not always tell you what comes with a mahjong set. Before choosing a colour, make a short inventory of what you need and compare it with the written product description. That small step makes it much easier to compare a coordinated kit with a box of tiles or a collection of separate accessories.
Start with the game your group plays
Ask your teacher or regular group which version of mahjong they play. American mahjong uses an annual card and has equipment requirements that differ from other versions. A listing simply called “mahjong set” is not enough information. Confirm that the set is intended for your game, then check the current card separately with the National Mah Jongg League.
Read the contents as an inventory
Write down the tiles, four racks, any pushers, dice, mat and carrying bag. Mark each item as included, already owned or still needed. Check whether the photograph shows optional styling pieces. A pretty pouch beside the tiles may be a separate purchase; a rack may or may not include a pusher.
Do the same for the annual card. If the listing does not explicitly include it, do not assume it is in the box. This is particularly important when buying a gift for someone who wants to join a group immediately.
Check how the pieces work together
Look for tile and rack dimensions rather than relying on a word such as “large.” Think about your table, the room available for four players and how the set will travel. If a bag is included, find out whether it holds only the tiles or the entire kit. A mat that looks lovely in a photograph still needs to fit your usable tabletop.
Compare the finished purchase
Use three columns on a sheet of paper: included, additional cost and unanswered question. Add delivery charges or optional services before comparing totals. A lower tile price and a lower ready-to-use total are different things.
Finally, read the return conditions before ordering, especially for a gift. Save the product description and order confirmation so you can check the contents on arrival.

- Can everyone comfortably identify the tile faces?
- Are the racks and accessories compatible?
- What do I still need to buy separately?
- Where will everything live between games?
Choose the kit once those answers feel clear. The best colour is much easier to enjoy when the practical details are already settled.
