BEFORE YOU BUY

Match the rules.
Then the mood.

American and Chinese mahjong share roots, but the rules and equipment are not interchangeable by default.

American mahjong

For NMJL-style play, players use the current annual card to choose winning hands. The playing inventory includes 152 tiles: 108 suited tiles, 16 winds, 12 dragons, 8 flowers and 8 jokers. Some retail sets contain additional spare tiles.

Check the product’s exact inventory, rack compatibility and whether the card is included. Decorative extras are not a substitute for playable tiles.

Chinese mahjong

There are several regional rulesets. A common core has 136 tiles; sets with eight flower and season tiles have 144. Rules and scoring depend on the group. These are not NMJL sets.

We no longer carry Chinese sets. If that is what your group plays, confirm their requirements before shopping elsewhere.

Ask: “Do you use an annual American mahjong card?” Then check which rules, tile size and accessories they already use.
