Keep the first evening relaxed. Learn together, pause when needed, and agree on the rules before the first shuffle.

Confirm that everyone is playing the same American ruleset. Have the current annual card available for each player. Check the full playing tile inventory, including eight jokers. Set out four racks, and check that your tiles fit them. Have dice ready; use a mat if your table needs one. Choose a well-lit table with room for four players and the tile walls. Invite a patient experienced player, or open the American 101 guide. Agree on house rules and take a practice hand slowly.

Accessories and cards are not automatically included with every set. Check your product’s contents before your guests arrive.
