How to Lend a Mahjong Set Without Losing Track of Pieces

Use a simple handover inventory, care note and return check when lending your tiles, racks and mat to a friend.

Lending a mahjong set is easier when both people know exactly what is included and how it should return. A short shared checklist protects the friendship as much as the equipment.

Make the handover visible

Count the playing inventory and list the accessories. Photograph the packed arrangement and identify any spare pieces that should stay separate. Mention existing marks so neither person has to guess later whether something is new.

Agree on the return date and whether the borrower may lend the set onward. Do not assume those details are obvious because you know each other well.

Include the practical care note

Share the maker's cleaning and storage instructions. Ask the borrower to report a spill, missing tile or damaged closure before attempting a repair. Keep paper cards and personal items out of the loan unless they are explicitly included.

A labelled pouch for dice and spares makes small pieces easier to track. If the borrower is hosting multiple tables, ask that each set remain separate.

Check together on return

Recount the equipment before putting it away. If something is missing, retrace the packing location calmly and use the inventory to identify the exact piece. Avoid replacing it with a similar-looking tile without checking the back and dimensions.

Café Mahjong's storage guide offers a useful routine for keeping a kit organised between games. The handover does not need to feel formal. A two-minute check can prevent a much more awkward conversation weeks later.
