Why Can You Not Always Pick Up a Discard in Mahjong?

Learn why needing a tile is not enough to claim it, and distinguish a normal exposure from a tile that completes mahjong.

In NMJL play, needing a discarded tile does not by itself allow you to take it. A normal claim must complete a permitted exposure; claiming the winning tile is a separate case. A single or pair cannot ordinarily be exposed just to save it for later.

Ask what the tile would complete

Before claiming, identify the exact purpose: an eligible exposed group or the complete winning hand. Do not take a tile merely because it might become useful after a future draw.

This is a common adjustment for players coming from games where discarded cards can be held while a combination develops. American mahjong has its own structure, so familiar habits may not transfer.

Practise without a live clock

Use an open teaching exercise with a partner. Show a potential discard, state the line you are considering and explain what taking it would complete. Have your teacher check the answer against the rules and the card.

Include examples where the tempting tile cannot be called. Recognising an unavailable option is part of learning, even when the tile would be very helpful.

Keep timing and purpose separate

A claim must satisfy both the rules for use and the current opportunity to call. This introduction does not replace the full rules on timing, concealed hands or competing claims; consult the shared rulebook for those situations.

Use Café Mahjong's beginner resources to prepare questions for your next lesson. If a digital game refuses a move, investigate the exact situation before assuming the software or your memory must be correct.
