What to Do When Someone Cancels Mahjong Night

Use a clear substitute plan or an agreed alternative when a four-player mahjong evening loses a guest.

A cancellation is easier to handle when the group already knows the options. Keep the response practical: confirm the missing seat, offer a substitute invitation and decide together whether the remaining plan still works.

Ask before inviting someone new

Let the host approve additional guests. Share the game's level, card and start time with any substitute. Do not surprise the table with a new learner if the evening was arranged for fast play, or with a fast player if it was arranged for coaching.

Set a reasonable reply deadline so the rest of the group can plan their evening.

Offer alternatives honestly

If no substitute is available, the group might reschedule, practise together or choose a recognised smaller-player variant. Agree on the exact rules before starting. Do not invent an empty-seat procedure and present it as standard four-player mahjong.

A practice session can be useful, but ask whether that is how the remaining guests want to spend the time. People may have made travel or childcare arrangements specifically to play.

Improve the next invitation

Maintain an opt-in substitute list with permission. Keep personal contact information within the group and ask before adding someone to a chat. A clear cancellation message is kinder than leaving everyone waiting for a reply.

Use Café Mahjong's regular-night guide to set expectations once, then keep future updates short. The aim is to preserve the relationship as well as the evening, without treating one cancellation as a reason to pressure anyone into attending.
