Care for your kit

Should You Roll or Fold Your Mahjong Mat?

Choose storage based on the mat's care instructions, with attention to creases, moisture and pressure from other equipment.

Follow the care instructions for your specific mat when deciding whether to roll or fold it. Similar-looking mats can use different surfaces and backing materials, so another player's storage method is not a universal rule.

Check before making a crease

Look for the manufacturer's stated storage method. If the listing is unclear, ask whether folding is intended and whether a particular direction of rolling is recommended. Do not force a thick mat into a small pouch merely because it fits when compressed.

Keep sharp rack corners and heavy objects from pressing into the stored surface. A crease created under a packed kit may be harder to avoid than the fold itself.

Put it away dry

Inspect both sides before packing. A mat that feels dry on top may still have moisture underneath after a spill or cleaning. Follow the maker's drying guidance and wait until it is ready for storage.

Avoid using an iron, hair dryer or direct heat to remove a crease unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Heat can affect surfaces, backing or adhesives.

Match the container to the mat

A sleeve or tube should hold the mat without forcing the edges. If you store it flat, choose a clean space where it will not be bent by other items.

For Café Mahjong mats, check the selected product rather than borrowing advice from another design. A storage habit that protects the surface and is easy to repeat is more useful than a clever packing trick that needs force.
