How to Gradually Stop Relying on Mahjong App Hints

Use suggested hands as feedback rather than an automatic answer, with a simple progression toward independent decisions.

Suggested-hand features can help a new player notice possibilities, but they are most useful when you compare them with your own thinking. Let the hint become feedback instead of the first action every time a hand appears.

Make a prediction first

Before opening a suggestion, identify one or two plausible sections of the card. Explain which tiles led you there. You do not need a perfect answer; you need a starting point to compare.

Then view the hint and inspect why the suggested line fits. Check the complete requirements on your card rather than accepting a percentage or ranking without understanding it.

Reduce help one task at a time

You might keep automatic sorting while turning off hand suggestions, or use hints only after making an initial choice. Check which controls the app actually offers and keep the card and rules consistent with your group.

Avoid removing every aid at once if that makes practice frustrating. The aim is to isolate one skill so you can tell what is improving.

Transfer the skill to physical tiles

Repeat a similar exercise with real pieces and no software arranging them for you. Can you recognise the same relationships? Note whether the difficulty is card knowledge, tile identification or organising the rack.

Café Mahjong's practice guide can help structure short sessions. Measure progress by decisions you can explain without a prompt, not simply by a higher win count against a computer. Keep difficult examples for a teacher rather than guessing repeatedly at the reason.
