Mahjong Solitaire and Table Mahjong Are Different Games

Played tile matching on a screen? Here is how a shared mahjong table differs and how to choose the right first lesson.

If your first experience of mahjong was matching pairs of exposed tiles on a screen, a table game may look unexpectedly different. Mahjong solitaire and multiplayer mahjong use related imagery, but they do not teach the same task.

Matching pairs is not a table-game tutorial

Solitaire generally asks you to remove matching available tiles from a layout. At an American mahjong table, players develop hands through a sequence of draws, discards and other rule-governed actions. Familiar symbols may help you recognise the equipment, but the decisions are different.

There is no need to apologise for starting with the puzzle. Simply tell a prospective teacher that you know the imagery but have not played the multiplayer game. That gives them the correct starting point.

Search for the lesson you actually need

Use “beginner American mahjong lesson” if that is your group's version. Check that the description includes tile identification, setup, reading the chosen card and supervised play. A search for “mahjong app” alone may lead back to solitaire.

Before registering, ask whether materials are provided and whether you need your own card. You may be able to try a lesson before choosing equipment.

Keep the first session modest

A useful goal is to identify the tile families and follow a coached turn. Winning a complete game can come later. Write down the parts that felt unfamiliar rather than trying to memorise everything at once.

Start with Café Mahjong's learning guide, then explore our sets once you know the version and setting that suit you. A little clarity at the beginning makes the first invitation much easier to accept.
