When Should You Consider Changing Your Mahjong Hand?

Use new tiles, visible information and existing commitments to reassess a hand without chasing every possible line.

Changing direction in mahjong can be sensible, but constant switching can leave you collecting unrelated pieces. Reassess when something meaningful changes, then compare the new option with the hand you are actually building.

Name the reason to reconsider

Perhaps several useful tiles arrive, a required piece becomes unavailable or the original line was read incorrectly. Identify the trigger before scanning the entire card again.

A vague feeling that another hand might be better is not much to compare. A specific new pair or an impossible requirement gives the decision a clearer basis.

Check existing commitments

Read the candidate line fully and consider any exposures already made. Do not assume visible groups can be reshaped to suit a new idea. Confirm compatibility with the card and rules before treating the switch as available.

In a practice session, lay the two possibilities out separately. Count which tiles genuinely work in each and which would need to be replaced.

Avoid judging only by the ending

A switch can be reasonable even if someone else wins immediately afterward. Likewise, a lucky outcome does not make every part of the decision sound. Review what was known when you chose.

Keep a short note after practice: the original direction, the new information and the reason for changing or staying. Discuss recurring uncertainties with a teacher.

Café Mahjong's learning resources are a starting point for building that habit. The goal is not a rule that says “always pivot” or “never pivot.” It is a decision you can explain from the actual tiles and constraints.
