How to Measure Your Table for a Mahjong Mat
Measure the usable tabletop, seating space and rack layout to choose a mahjong mat that fits your game night.
Choose a mahjong mat with a tape measure before you choose its pattern. The right size depends on the usable surface of your table, where four players sit and how your equipment is arranged. There is no need to guess from a styled photograph.
Measure the actual playing surface
For a square or rectangular table, record its width and length. For a round table, record the diameter. Note any raised edge, inset panel or obstruction that reduces the flat surface. Measure the table you will actually use, including an extension leaf only if you plan to leave it in place.
A rectangular mat on a round table needs more thought than comparing one measurement. Its corners may extend beyond the usable surface even when its width seems suitable.
Mark out the proposed mat
Use removable paper markers to outline the mat's published dimensions. Avoid tape that could damage the finish. Put the chairs where they normally sit and place your racks and cards within the outline.
Check the space between each player and the central playing area. Can everyone reach comfortably without leaning over a tall centrepiece or another person's rack? A larger mat does not automatically create a more usable table.
Run a simple practice setup
Arrange the equipment without beginning a full game. Place a wall and a rack at each side, then check where the cards and discarded tiles will sit. Notice whether a chair is blocked by a table leg and whether the fourth seat has less space than the others.
Keep drinks on side tables if the tabletop becomes crowded. This often improves the layout more than trying to squeeze every accessory onto the mat.
Read the listing carefully
Check the finished dimensions, shape, edge treatment and care instructions. If the product has a storage sleeve, confirm that the sleeve is included. Do not assume the mat can be folded, machine-washed or trimmed to fit; those choices depend on the material and the maker's instructions.
Record your fit before ordering
- Usable table width and length, or diameter.
- Mat dimensions and shape.
- Space for four racks and four cards.
- Comfortable reach from every chair.
- Storage space when the mat is not in use.
Once the outline works, choose the design. A favourite pattern feels even better when everyone has room for the next round.
