Care for your kit
What to Pack When You Take Mahjong to a Friend’s House
Pack for mahjong at a friend’s house with a shared equipment plan, a quick inventory and a bag that fits the pieces you actually need.
Taking mahjong to a friend's house is easier when the group agrees on equipment before anyone starts packing. You may need a full kit, or only your card and personal essentials. A short message can prevent four mats arriving at one table while everyone assumes someone else brought the racks.
Confirm who brings what
Ask the host which version of mahjong the group will play and what equipment is already available. Agree on who supplies the set, mat, racks and any other required pieces. Players using an annual card should confirm the appropriate edition for that session.
Check the table size if you are bringing a mat. It is much simpler to choose a suitable setup at home than discover that the mat hangs over the host's table.
Pack from an inventory
Lay out what you have agreed to bring before putting it in the bag. Use your own set's contents list and check small pieces as well as the obvious ones. Keep accessories in a secure compartment so that they do not disappear into the bottom of a larger tote.
Leave unnecessary items at home. A lighter, well-organised kit can be easier to handle than a bag filled with every accessory you own.
Check the bag with the kit inside
Confirm that the longest pieces fit without pressure and that the closure works normally. Follow the bag's care and load guidance. Do not force racks into a compartment designed only for tiles or assume a decorative handle can carry any weight.
Keep drinks and other liquids separate. Secure equipment during the journey so it is not sliding around or being crushed by other luggage.
Make arrival straightforward
Allow time to set up before the agreed start. Ask where the host would like the bag and spare pieces stored, keeping walkways clear. If you notice damage or a missing item, mention it before play begins rather than waiting for the group to discover it mid-game.
Keep packaging and personal belongings together so that cleanup remains simple.
Count before leaving
Pack in the same order you used at home. Check the table, chairs and nearby floor, then confirm that borrowed pieces have returned to the correct owner. When you arrive home, let anything damp dry according to its care guidance before putting the kit away. A few deliberate minutes at either end of the evening help keep the next invitation easy to accept.
