Set your table
Is Your Folding Table Ready for Mahjong?
Check leg locks, seams, reach and storage before choosing a folding table for regular mahjong nights.
A folding table can be convenient for mahjong, especially when the room has another purpose during the week. Before decorating it, check stability and the uninterrupted space available for play.
Set it up according to its instructions
Make sure legs and supports are fully locked, the floor is level and the table is used within its stated limits. Do not improvise repairs to a damaged hinge or leg. Replace unsafe furniture rather than hiding the problem beneath a mat.
Sit at all four sides. Confirm that knees and chair arms fit without repeatedly striking the supports. A stable empty table may feel different when four players use it.
Inspect the top
A centre seam or raised edge can interfere with tile movement. Place the covering and test a short wall across the area where play will happen. Check that the mat is supported and does not hang into the players' laps.
Measure the actual top rather than relying on the table's folded dimensions. The bag or box size is not the usable playing surface.
Plan storage and setup
Choose a storage spot where the folded table cannot fall into a walkway. Keep the mat clean and dry separately. If moving and opening the table is awkward, arrange help before guests arrive.
Compare Café Mahjong mats only after measuring the table you will use. The right setup should feel dependable throughout an evening and be manageable to put away afterward, without a collection of improvised fixes.
