Why Does My Mahjong Mat Slide During Play?

Check the tabletop, backing, overhang and trapped fabric before trying to fix a sliding mahjong mat.

A sliding mahjong mat is a setup problem to investigate, not a reason to press harder on the tiles. The backing, tabletop and anything between them all affect stability.

Check the layers first

Remove crumbs and make sure the table and mat are dry. If the mat sits on a loose tablecloth, test it directly on a compatible tabletop instead. The movement may be coming from the cloth underneath rather than the mat itself.

Follow the table and mat makers' instructions before adding another liner. Adhesive pads, grip sprays or improvised rubber layers can affect finishes and should not be the first experiment.

Look for unsupported edges

A mat that hangs beyond the table can move when someone brushes against it. Reposition it so the playing area is supported. If the selected size is too large, a smaller suitable surface is more dependable than repeatedly pulling the corners back.

Check that a chair arm, sleeve or card holder is not catching an edge during ordinary turns.

Test with a normal movement

Build and move a short wall gently, then watch the mat's edge. If it shifts, stop and adjust before laying out a full game. If the backing is deteriorating, sticky or shedding, ask the seller about care or replacement rather than covering the problem with glue.

Café Mahjong mat listings are the place to confirm the selected product's specifications. Keep photographs of the surface and backing when requesting help; they make a practical diagnosis much easier than a description of “not enough grip.”
