Should Your Mahjong Mat Have Printed Instructions?
Decide whether a printed guide helps your table, and check that its directions match the game you actually play.
Printed reminders can be useful while learning, but a mat is not a substitute for the correct rules. Before choosing an instructional design, check what it explains and whether it matches your group's version of mahjong.
Read every instruction before buying
Ask for a clear image of the text. A diagram intended for one variant may confuse players of another. Compare it with the reference your teacher uses rather than assuming all printed directions are universal.
Also check orientation. Can each player read the relevant reminder, or is everything designed for a single viewing position? A helpful diagram for the host may be upside down for someone else.
Test what remains visible
Racks, cards and walls can cover a printed border. Imagine the complete table setup before paying for a feature you may not be able to see during play.
If the reminders fill the centre, consider whether they compete with discards. A separate reference sheet, placed outside the active area, may be easier to consult and replace when your needs change.
Choose a learning tool for now
Some players enjoy reminders long after their first lessons; others stop noticing them. Neither preference is wrong. Ask the regular group what would help and whether the mat also needs to work for other games.
Café Mahjong's mat collection offers designs to compare visually. Read the selected listing carefully and treat any printed teaching content as something to verify, not as automatic authority. The surface should support the way your table plays.
